Are you curious about Pilates but unsure what to expect in your first class? You’re not alone! Many newcomers have questions, and this guide will help ease your mind and prepare you for a rewarding experience.
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a low-impact exercise method designed to improve flexibility, strength, and posture. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, this system focuses on core strength, body alignment, controlled movements, and breath awareness. Suitable for all fitness levels, Pilates is a perfect choice for beginners eager to enhance their well-being.
What to Expect in Your First Pilates Class
Class Structure
At Live Pilates, our classes are 55 minutes of invigorating movement! Here’s what you can expect:
-
Warm-Up: We start with mobility exercises to prepare your body.
-
Full-Body Engagement: Our workouts target all major muscle groups and improve posture—especially beneficial for those long hours at a desk. You’ll progress to exercises that challenge your strength and stability.
-
Spinal Mobility: Mobilize your spine in all six directions: flexion, extension, lateral flexion, and rotation. It’s all about keeping your body happy!
-
Stretching and Flexibility: Pilates engages muscles through both concentric (shortening) and eccentric (lengthening) contractions, which not only strengthens but also improves flexibility. This approach leads to longer, leaner, and more toned muscles.
-
Cool Down: We conclude with a cool-down period to stretch out your muscles.
The Equipment
For our group classes, we proudly use the Merrithew Reformer with Tower springs from Canada, known for its gold-standard quality and greater movement variety.
Additionally, we incorporate props like the Jumpboard, flex bands, stability cushions, Pilates balls, foam rollers, fitness circles, hand weights, and ankle weights.
For private clients, we also offer access to a complete set of Pilates equipment, including the Cadillac, Ladder Barrel, Stability Chair, and Arc Barrel. Our instructors will create customized workouts tailored just for you!
What to Bring and Wear
What to Wear: Comfortable, form-fitting clothing is ideal. Choose slightly stretchy bottoms for ease of movement. Grip socks are required for both safety and hygiene, ensuring secure footing during exercises while keeping the equipment clean and well-maintained. They’re available for purchase in our studio.
What to Bring:
Water Bottle: Stay hydrated during class!
Towel: A small towel can be handy for wiping your forehead during more intense sessions.
Common Fears and Misconceptions
“I’m not flexible enough!” No worries! Pilates improves flexibility, and classes are designed to accommodate all levels, with instructors providing appropriate modifications.
“I have to be fit to start Pilates.” Pilates is for anyone looking to improve body awareness, fitness, or condition their body for everyday activities, regardless of age or gender.
“I won’t be able to keep up.” Your instructor will guide you through exercises, offering options for different fitness levels. Feel free to take breaks and ask for help!
“I have an old injury.” Pilates is known for its rehabilitative benefits. Our instructors provide modifications tailored to your needs but always consult a qualified medical professional first. Your safety is our top priority!

Group Class vs. Private Class
Both group and private classes offer unique benefits:
Group Classes: Our group classes are kept small, with a maximum of 5 people, allowing our instructors to give each participant more dedicated attention compared to larger classes. This ensures proper alignment and technique, helping you achieve optimal results. Connect with others on a similar fitness journey and engage in dynamic exercises that keep the experience lively and effective.
Private Classes: Experience a personalized approach that allows instructors to focus on your individual goals and needs. This one-on-one attention enables quicker progress and a deeper understanding of the movements.
The choice ultimately depends on your personal preferences and fitness objectives—whether you thrive in a community or prefer individualized attention, we have the right option for you!
